How Deep Is Your Love?

Jesus’ Love Goes Pretty Deep

This past Sunday was Resurrection Sunday, otherwise known as Easter. It is the day we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection, and the reality of that event is totally amazing.

In Matthew 24:1-12, we read about the women going to Jesus’ tomb and finding it empty. They went and told the disciples, but their words seemed like nonsense, and the disciples didn’t believe them. Peter ran to the tomb and found it empty just as they had said. Empty except for the linen cloth that Jesus had been wrapped in.

Later, in verses 36-49, Jesus appeared among them in a locked room. At first, they thought they were seeing a ghost. Then Jesus invited them to touch the scars on His hands. Think about that—these wounds were already healed after just a couple of days. Just like the disciples, it can be hard for us to believe that Jesus rose from the dead.

But there is ample evidence that Christ was who He said He was. Just ask Lee Strobel. He was an atheist journalist who set out to prove Christ wasn’t real, but in the process discovered the opposite. That journey lead him to become a Christian and write The Case for Christ.

So how deep is Jesus’ love for us? So deep that He willing went through everything He endured: being arrested, mocked, beaten, whipped, and humiliated.  He was forced to carry a heavy wooden cross, was nailed to it, and left hanging there until he died.

All of this because He loves us that much.

While Pastor Lisa was working on this sermon series on the depth of Jesus’ love was for us, she was reminded of the Bee Gees song How Deep is Your Love. This tender love ballad from the 1970s captures the vulnerability of romantic love. It expresses the fear of being left emotionally exposed in a “world of fools”.

It’s amazing to think about how the lyrics of a love song can reflect our relationship with Christ:

“I believe in you
You know the door to my very soul
You’re the light in my deepest, darkest hour
You’re my savior when I fall
And you may not think I care for you
When you know down inside that I really do
And it’s me you need to show

How deep is your love?”

Too often, we get stuck looking for a worldly kind of love and miss the love Christ is offering us. His love for us runs so deep the He willingly went through everything He endured on our behalf.

So where are you looking for love?

And how deep is your desire for Jesus?
